"CPD" gets used loosely in scaffolding. For most scaffolders it means the two-day CISRS refresher that keeps their card valid. That is important, but it is not the whole of continuing professional development, and treating it as if it were quietly caps your career at card level. This guide separates the mandatory card renewal from the development that actually moves you forward.

The CISRS refresher: mandatory, and about your card

CISRS requires Scaffolder and Advanced Scaffolder cardholders to complete a CPD refresher to renew their card every five years, set at 14 hours over the five-year cycle, brought in after the HSE asked for it in 2014.[1] It runs over two days, classroom and practical, updating you on TG20, SG4, current legislation and safe practice.[2]

Do it. It keeps you legal and current. But be clear about what it is: safety and technical refreshment tied to your card. It is not career development.

The development the refresher doesn't cover

Nothing in the CISRS refresher teaches you contracts, pricing, payment rights, or how to run a job commercially. Those are the skills that separate a scaffolder from a manager, and they sit entirely outside card renewal. If your only CPD is the five-yearly refresher, your professional development has stopped at the card.

What real CPD looks like for a scaffolder moving up

Structured learning you can evidence: contract management, estimating, CDM duties, financial literacy. Certificated, dated and recorded. This is the CPD that earns a place on a CV for a supervisor or manager role, and the evidence that supports an NVQ application.

How to evidence it

Keep a record: what you studied, when, how many hours, and the certificate to prove it. A certificate with a unique, verifiable reference stands up when an employer or client asks. Get your CPD straight

  • Keep your CISRS refresher current. It is mandatory, and it is about your card.

  • Treat CPD as a habit, not a five-yearly event.

The refresher keeps your card. Real CPD builds your career. They are not the same thing.
